Suggested Reading List

General How To Books

Quilter's Complete Guide
by Marianne Fons and Liz Porter
Oxmoor House
This book tells everything you could ever want to know about all aspects of piecing and quilting. It is well illustrated with photographs and drawings. I recommend this book if you are new to quilting and my directions haven't been enough to give you the big picture.

Quilting by Machine
Singer Sewing Reference Library
Also a good overview of quilting methods, with an emphasis on machine methods. You won't find directions for hand sewing or tying quilts.

Quiltmaking Tips and Techniques
by Jane Townswick
Rodale Press
Includes information on every topic imaginable, with great little how to segments followed by timesaving techniques.

Happy Endings
by Mimi Dietrich
That Patchwork Place
Complete and detailed information about binding and finishing your quilt. I refer to this book often.

Shortcuts- A Concise Guide to Rotary Cutting
by Donna Lynn Thomas
That Patchwork Place
A great resource for cutting pieces quickly and easily. Wonderful if you are just learning to use a rotary cutter.

Books with Patterns and How To Information

Lap Quilting with Georgia Bonesteel
by Georgia Bonesteel
Oxmoor House
This book contains templates for twelve inch blocks for almost every pattern which I have suggested for students. Great overview of quilting techniques. The book also has a section on Georgia's method of hand quilting before piecing the top.

Scrap Quilts
by Judy Martin
Moon Over the Mountain Publishing
Mostly about making a dozen or so specific quilts, but includes a good how to section and 72 traditional patterns, some of which are the ones I recommended. This was my first quilt book ever.

Quick Country Quilts
by Debbie Mumm
Rodale Press
Most of the patterns are not for kids, but this book has a great how to section that talks about all kinds of speedy methods and has some great ideas for Heat-n-bond applique.

Other Books of Interest

How Not to Make a Prize-Winning Quilt
by Ami Simms
Mallery Press
The main reason I recommend this book is because it will help you keep your sense of humor. The quilts I've made with students, more than any others, tend to take on a life of their own. This book will help get you through it!

Imagery on Fabric
by Jean Ray Laury
C & T Publishing
A really fantastic book that will give you more ideas than you can ever use for putting pictures on fabric. This book includes details of all the ideas I have suggested.

Hands on Dying
by Betsy Blumenthal and Kathryn Kreider
Interweave Press
I haven't discussed dying fabric with your class, but if the idea sounds interesting, this is the book to use.

Children's Literature about Quilting

Please refer to the World Wide Web Quilting page for a wonderful list of children's books that include quilting.

Betty Reynolds also has an excellent list of children's literature about quilting.

Also check out Barbara Robson's list of children's books about quilting.
